What Are PTFE Semi-Finished Products?

PTFE semi-finished products are basic stock shapes manufactured from PTFE resin through molding, extrusion, or skiving processes. They serve as raw materials for producing seals, mechanical parts, anti-corrosion components, and electrical insulation parts across various industries.

Product Forms in This Category:

PTFE Tube (Hollow): Fluid transfer, wire insulation, pipe lining, heat exchangers

PTFE Rod (Solid): Machining precision parts — valve seats, seals, bearings, piston rings

PTFE Molded Sheet: Thick, dense sheet for heavy-duty seals, structural parts, bridge bearing pads

PTFE Skived Sheet: Thin, wide sheet for precision gaskets, insulation materials, anti-corrosion linings

The problem they solve: Chemical processing, semiconductor manufacturing, food processing, and pharmaceutical industries demand materials that resist aggressive chemicals, handle extreme temperatures (-180°C to +200°C), and provide low friction. Rubber degrades. Metal corrodes. PTFE solves all three.

Key Benefits

1. Universal Chemical Resistance

PTFE resists almost all chemicals across pH 0-14, acids, alkalis, solvents, hydrocarbons, and more.

2. Wide Temperature Range

Continuous service from -180°C to +200°C, cryogenic to high-temperature applications.

3. Lowest Coefficient of Friction

Coefficient of friction as low as 0.04, self-lubricating, ideal for sliding applications.

4. Excellent Electrical Insulation

High dielectric strength, they are ideal for electrical and electronic applications.

5. Non-Stick Surface

PTFE semi-finished products prevent media adhesion and buildup, are easy to clean, and reduce contamination risk.

6. Versatile Processing

The products are available in multiple forms, such as machined, molded, extruded, and skived, to meet diverse application needs.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between PTFE tube and PTFE rod? When should I use each?

A: PTFE tube is hollow, designed for fluid transfer, wire insulation, heat exchanger tubing, and applications requiring a passage through the center.

PTFE rod is solid, designed as a raw material for machining custom parts such as valve seats, seals, bearings, and piston rings.

Quick rule:

Need to convey fluids or run wires through it → Tube.

Need solid material to machine into a part → Rod.

Both share the same chemical and thermal properties, the difference is form and function.

Q: What is the difference between skived sheet and molded sheet? When should I use each?

A: Skived sheet is rotary cut from a molded PTFE billet. It produces thin sheets (0.05-8mm) with tight thickness tolerance, smooth surface, and large width (up to 2700mm). It is ideal for precision gaskets, insulation materials, and large flange gaskets.

Molded sheet is compression molded directly. It produces thick sheets (2-100mm) with dense structure and high mechanical strength, and ideal for heavy-duty seals, structural parts, bridge bearing pads, and machining blanks.

Quick rule:

Need thin, wide, precise thickness → Skived.

Need thick, strong, structural → Molded.

Q: What are the temperature and pressure limits for PTFE semi-finished products?

A: Temperature: Continuous service -180°C to +200°C, short-term up to +300°C.

Pressure: Tube positive pressure up to 1.6 MPa, vacuum up to 77 KPa (depends on wall thickness and diameter). Molded sheet pressure rating depends on thickness and gasket design.

Chemical: pH 0-14, not compatible with molten alkali metals or elemental fluorine.

Important note: PTFE is relatively soft, it may creep under high pressure and temperature. For high-pressure service, consider filled PTFE or metal-jacketed products.
