Gland packing is a braided sealing material installed in the stuffing box of pumps, valves, and mixers to achieve dynamic sealing. When the gland nut is tightened, the packing expands radially against both the shaft and the housing, creating a seal that can be adjusted over time. As the packing wears, the gland nut can be re-tightened to restore sealing force.
The problem they solve: O-rings and static seals fail on moving shafts. Rubber degrades in chemicals. PTFE packing is soft but lacks abrasion resistance. Different applications demand different materials, one packing does not fit all. Choosing the wrong packing means frequent replacement, production downtime, and costly maintenance.

Key Features: Excellent thermal conductivity, high tensile strength, creep resistance, self-lubricating.
Limitation: Not for strong oxidizers at high temperature (nitric acid, chlorine).
Construction: Carbon fiber yarns with PTFE dispersion or graphite impregnation.
Suitable For: High temperature steam, heat transfer fluids, extreme heat applications.
Key Features: Excellent thermal conductivity, self-lubricating, high temperature resistance, low friction.
Limitation: Not for strong oxidizers, may oxidize in acids.
Reinforcement Options: Carbon fiber, glass fiber, 304/316 SS wire, Inconel wire.
Suitable For: Food, pharmaceutical, pulp and paper, high-speed rotating equipment.
Key Features: Clean, non-contaminating, easy to cut and install, double lubrication.
Construction: High-modulus fibers with square interlock braiding.

PTFE packings resist almost all chemicals across pH 0-14, acids, alkalis, solvents, and more. Ideal for clean chemical and FDA-regulated services.
Aramid/PTFE packings are extremely tough, surviving where PTFE packing gets shredded. They handle slurries, sand, crystals, and dirty fluids, lasting 5-10x longer than PTFE in abrasive services.
Graphite packings handle up to +650°C, ideal for extreme heat and steam. Carbon fiber packings provide excellent thermal conductivity to dissipate frictional heat.
Unlike O-rings, gland packings can be re-tightened as they wear, extending service life and reducing downtime.
Oil-free PTFE and synthetic fiber packings meet FDA 21 CFR 177.1550 for food and pharmaceutical applications.
One material does not fit all applications. Choose the right packing for your specific media, temperature, pressure, and speed.
A: PTFE packing is soft, low-friction, and chemically inert, it is suitable for clean chemicals, food/pharma, and clean water. It is the lowest cost option but has zero abrasion resistance, it wears out fast in slurries or dirty fluids.
Aramid/PTFE packing is tough and abrasion-resistant, and suitable for slurries, sand, dirty fluids, and abrasive media. It costs 2-3x more but lasts 5-10x longer in abrasive service.
Quick rule:
Clean fluid → PTFE packing.
Dirty fluid with solids → Aramid/PTFE packing.
Choose by your media, not by habit. If you need more selecting guidance, feel free to contact Taifno.
A: Graphite packing handles up to +650°C: best for extreme heat, steam, and high-temperature fluids.
Carbon fiber packing handles up to +350°C+: best for high speed and heat dissipation where PTFE would soften.
PTFE packing is limited to +200°C: above this, PTFE softens and extrudes.
Quick rule:
Above +350°C → Graphite.
+260°C to +350°C → Carbon fiber.
Below +200°C → PTFE (if chemicals) or Aramid (if abrasives).
Need help choosing? Send us your temperature, media, and pump data to us, we recommend the right packing in one reply.
A: Two common mistakes:
(1) Over-tightening the gland: excessive compression damages the packing, increases friction heat, and accelerates shaft wear. Use a torque wrench and follow our installation specifications.
(2) Using the wrong packing for the application: PTFE packing in abrasive service wears out in weeks; aramid/PTFE packing in clean chemical service costs more with no benefit. Please choose by your media, temperature, pressure, and speed.
