What Is PTFE Packing?

PTFE packing is braided from high-quality PTFE fibers, soft, low-friction, and chemically inert. It seals pumps, valves, and mixers against almost all chemicals, from acids to solvents. It is the go-to sealing solution for clean, non-abrasive fluids.

How it works:

PTFE fibers: Provide universal chemical resistance (pH 0-14), non-stick surface, and the lowest friction of any solid material (0.05-0.20)

Lubricants: Reduce friction further, dissipate heat, and prevent shaft scoring

Braided construction: Interlocking braid provides flexibility and uniform shaft contact for reliable sealing

Key characteristics:

Universal chemical resistance: pH 0-14

Lowest coefficient of friction: 0.05-0.20

Self-lubricating: no external lubrication needed

FDA-compliant grades: available for food and pharmaceutical applications

Non-stick: media does not adhere to the packing

Why Choose PTFE Packing?

Problem

How PTFE Packing Solves It

Rubber swells and fails in chemicals

PTFE is chemically inert — no swelling, no degradation

Graphite oxidizes in acids

PTFE handles acids with ease — pH 0-14

Metal packing corrodes

PTFE is corrosion-proof — lasts where metal fails

High friction damages shafts

PTFE has the lowest friction (0.05-0.20) — self-lubricating

Food/pharma contamination risk

FDA-compliant grades available — pure, no extractables

Real-World Applications

Case Study 1: Chemical Plant — 2x Longer Life

Client: Chemical plant handling sulfuric acid

Challenge: Rubber packing on pump handling sulfuric acid was replaced every 3 months due to swelling and degradation. Each replacement meant 2 hours downtime.

Annual cost: $1,200 in packing + $8,000 in downtime.

Solution: Installed PTFE packing with PTFE yarn and lubricants. Universal chemical resistance to acid confirmed.

Result: Packing lasted over 7 months — 2x longer. Annual packing cost reduced by 50%. Downtime reduced from 8 replacements/year to 4 replacements/year.

Total annual savings: ~$4,000.

Case Study 2: Food Processing Plant — FDA Compliance Achieved

Client: Food processing plant handling fruit concentrates

Challenge: Needed FDA-compliant packing for sanitary pumps. Packing must not contaminate food products.

Solution: Supplied FDA-compliant PTFE packing with pure PTFE yarn — no lubricant leaching risk. Full FDA documentation provided.

Result: FDA compliance achieved. Packing performed reliably for 12 months. Zero contamination events. $15,000 in product loss prevented.

FAQ

Q: What is Braided Virgin PTFE Packing and when should I use it?

A: Braided packing made from PTFE fibers, soft, low-friction, and chemically inert. Seals pumps and valves against almost all chemicals, acids, solvents, alkalis, water, steam, and food/pharma (FDA grades available).

When to use it: Clean chemicals, food/pharma, clean water, acids, solvents, low-pressure steam.

When NOT to use it: Abrasive media (slurries, sand, ash), PTFE is soft and wears out fast. Use aramid/PTFE packing for dirty fluids. For high temperature above +260°C, use carbon/graphite packing.

Price check: PTFE costs less upfront than aramid/PTFE. If your media is clean, PTFE is the most cost-effective choice.

Q: PTFE and aramid/PTFE packing, which one saves you money?

A: The real cost is not the packing, it is the downtime.

PTFE packing costs less upfront and works perfectly on clean fluids. One PTFE packing can last 2-3 years on clean water or chemicals, annual cost is very low.

Aramid/PTFE packing costs 2-3x more upfront. In abrasive service, it lasts 5-10x longer than PTFE. But if your media is clean, aramid/PTFE is overkill, you are paying more for no benefit.

Quick rule:

Clean fluid → PTFE (lowest cost, works great).

Dirty fluid with solids → Aramid/PTFE (costs more but lasts far longer).

Send us your media and pump data, we recommend the right packing and show you the cost difference.

Q: What are the limits and the most common mistakes?

A: Temperature: -180°C to +200°C.

Pressure: up to 200 bar.

Speed: up to 20 m/s (static), up to 12 m/s (dynamic).

Chemical: pH 0-14, universal resistance, except molten alkali metals and elemental fluorine.

Three common mistakes:

(1) Using PTFE in abrasive service: it wears out fast. Use aramid/PTFE instead.

(2) Over-tightening: PTFE is soft; excessive compression causes cold flow and leakage. Use a torque wrench.

(3) Exceeding +260°C: PTFE softens and extrudes. Use carbon/graphite for high temperature.
