The PTFE packing set manufactured by Taifno consists of a set of PTFE sealing rings, including a top adapter ring, V-shaped intermediate rings, and a bottom adapter ring, designed for installation in a stuffing box.
It is suitable for a temperature range of -180°C to +200°C, withstands pressures up to 500 bar, covers a pH range of 0–14, and supports linear speeds of up to 5 m/s.

O-Ring Problem |
Why It Happens |
How Packing Set Fixes It |
|
Leaks on moving shafts |
O-rings are static seals — designed for fixed grooves, not shaft movement |
V-rings are dynamic — seal lips move with the shaft |
|
Cannot be adjusted |
Once installed, sealing force is fixed |
Re-tighten the gland nut as wear occurs — no disassembly |
|
Fails in chemicals |
Rubber swells, hardens, or degrades |
PTFE is chemically inert — pH 0-14 |
|
Replaced every few months |
Compression set — rubber takes permanent deformation |
PTFE has no compression set — lasts years |
|
Temperature limited |
Rubber hardens in cold, softens in heat |
-180°C to +200°C — cryogenic to sterilization |
1. Adjustable Sealing Force: O-rings are fixed — once installed, sealing force cannot be adjusted. PTFE packing sets are re-tightenable. As the packing wears over time, simply tighten the gland nut to restore sealing performance. No need to disassemble.
2. Dynamic Sealing for Moving Shafts: O-rings are static seals — they seal in one fixed groove and fail when the shaft moves. PTFE V-rings are designed specifically for reciprocating and slow rotary motion — seal lips move with the shaft, maintaining contact under pressure.
3. Pressure-Energized Sealing: The V-shaped geometry is engineered to be pressure-energized: as system pressure increases, it forces the sealing lips more firmly against the rod and housing, automatically enhancing sealing effectiveness.

Challenge: A chemical plant handling aggressive acid at 150°C replaced O-rings on control valve stems every 2-3 months — causing costly downtime and safety concerns.
Solution: PTFE V-ring packing set with carbon-filled grade. Installed with recommended torque specifications.
Result: Zero leakage for 18 months. Packing re-tightened twice during scheduled maintenance. 80% reduction in maintenance costs and downtime.
Challenge: A slurry pump handling abrasive media wore out standard packing every 4-6 weeks, requiring frequent production interruptions.
Solution: Glass-filled PTFE packing set with anti-extrusion rings.
Result: Packing set lasted 8 months — 8x longer than previous solution. Maintenance intervals extended. Production uptime significantly improved.
Challenge: A natural gas processing facility needed to meet ISO 15848 fugitive emissions standards on critical control valves.
Solution: PTFE-based low emission packing set with proprietary lubrication package, tested to ISO 15848.
Result: Passed emissions compliance. Leakage rates well below allowable limits. Long-term performance verified through continuous monitoring.

|
Virgin PTFE |
Clean chemicals, FDA applications, general service — lowest friction |
Lower wear resistance — not for abrasives |

A: It is a stack of PTFE rings, top adapter, V-shaped middle rings, bottom adapter, installed in a stuffing box.
When the gland nut is tightened, the V-rings expand radially against both the shaft and housing. System pressure further energizes the sealing lips, tighter seal as pressure rises. Self-energizing. Re-tightenable as wear occurs.
A: Switch when O-rings keep failing, on moving shafts, under pressure fluctuations, or in aggressive chemicals.
O-rings are static, they seal in fixed grooves. Packing sets are dynamic, adjustable, re-tightenable, and built for moving parts.
Cost comparison: O-rings cost less upfront. But if you replace them every 3 months, one packing set that lasts 3-5 years saves you a large amount of US dollars in parts, labor, and downtime.
A: Temperature: -180°C to +200°C (up to +315°C modified).
Pressure: up to 500 bar. Speed: < 5 m/s.
Most common mistake: over-tightening the gland. PTFE is soft, excessive compression causes cold flow, deforms rings, and creates leakage instead of sealing. Use a torque wrench. Tighten in increments.
